Melbourne's Award-Recognised Timber Studio

Custom joinery, hand-built furniture, and sculptural timber lighting for Melbourne's architects, designers, and builders.

We've been crafting timber from our Brunswick workshop since 2008, working across residential and commercial commissions for architects, interior designers, and builders. Luke's work has been recognised in four open-entry art prizes, including Sculptures by the Sea and the Wyndham City Art Prize. Send us your brief and we'll respond within two working days.

Eighteen years in timber. Four art prizes.

Luke Neil started in carpentry under the name Coolhand Carpentry in 2008. Over the years the work shifted from structural to something that blurs the line between joinery and sculpture. That shift shows up in four open-entry art prizes won across Luke's career · the Wyndham City Art Prize, the Wyndham Station Sculpture Prize, Sculptures by the Sea, and the Rainbow Serpent Festival.

Today the studio operates from a showroom and workshop at 394 Victoria St, Brunswick. We produce custom timber joinery for kitchen and bathroom renovations, furniture for residential and commercial spaces, and sculptural timber lighting for interior fit-outs. Most commissions come from interior designers, architects, and builders who need a reliable, detail-oriented maker they can brief once and trust to deliver.

Luke prides himself on being flexible and adaptive, to find solutions for a broad range of projects. Every piece that takes shape here reflects a distinct design sensibility and precise attention to detail, which are the hallmark of Luke's work.

There are artists that create beautiful art, and then there are artists who redefine what art can be. · Luke David Designs

Common questions

What type of projects do you take on?
We work across custom timber joinery, furniture, and sculptural lighting. Most commissions come from interior designers, architects, and builders on residential and commercial fit-outs, but we also take commissions direct from homeowners.
Can you work from architectural drawings?
Yes. We accept .dwg, .pdf, and hand-sketched drawings. Send through your plans and we'll respond with a design proposal and material specification within five working days.
What materials do you work with?
We work primarily in Australian hardwoods and softwoods, imported timbers, and reclaimed timber. Luke selects material by hand for each commission, matching grain, colour, and structural properties to the brief. Reclaimed timber is available as a material option across all service categories.
How long does a commission take?
Lead times vary by scope and current workshop load. Joinery commissions for builders and commercial fit-outs typically need 6-10 weeks from design sign-off. Contact us with your project timeline and we'll advise on current availability.
Do you handle delivery and installation?
Yes. We deliver and install all pieces ourselves, or work alongside your site team. Delivery and installation can be arranged for Melbourne metro addresses. Contact us for projects outside the metro area.
Where is your showroom?
Our showroom and workshop is at 394 Victoria St, Brunswick VIC 3056. Hours are Mon-Fri 7am-5pm and Sat 9am-3pm by appointment. Call ahead before visiting.
Can I see examples of previous work before I commission?
The gallery on this site shows a selection of completed commissions. For trade clients, we're also happy to arrange a studio visit to walk through material samples and current work in progress.
